Maryland 609 (often abbreviated as MD 609) is a classic heirloom variety of Nicotiana tabacum. It's an open-pollinated, non-GMO strain preserved from historical Maryland tobacco lines (USDA accession PI 552452). Originally developed and grown in Maryland, commercial production shifted to Pennsylvania (and sometimes Wisconsin) after the Maryland market declined, but the same genetic seed stock is used today.
Key Characteristics
Plant Growth — Reaches about 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall, producing 16–20 very large leaves up to 36 inches (91 cm) long and 18 inches (46 cm) wide. It's a heavy yielder with high suckering tendency.
Maturity — 55–65 days from transplant (50–90 days total including seedling stage).
Curing — Air-cured, turning to a light reddish-brown color. It's considered a "light air-cured" type, similar to Burley but thinner, lighter in body, and more neutral/mellow in flavor.
Flavor Profile — Medium strength, smooth, and approachable—less harsh than traditional Burley. Provides good volume and body when smoked, with a rich but non-intrusive taste.
Uses — Primarily for cigarette blends (historically and commercially significant in U.S. cigarettes), pipe tobacco, cigar filler, or blending to add strength and smoothness. Often mixed with flue-cured Virginias for balance.
Grown in Tennessee.
