Michels Cowpea is a Cream-colored with brown mottling (speckled pattern) heirloom variety of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), also known as Southern pea.
This variety traces its origins to seeds collected in 1941 by Vince Michels from a farm field in Tennessee while his U.S. Army unit marched past. His sister, Audrey (Michels) Kreutzer of Kansas, later donated it to Seed Savers Exchange, where it has been preserved and shared. Similar to of the older Whippoorwill cowpea, Michels Cowpea is a classic Southern variety with comparable speckled seeds.
