Amish Paste is a popular heirloom tomato variety renowned for its excellent flavor and versatility, especially as a paste tomato while also being suitable for fresh eating.
This open-pollinated heirloom dates back to the 1870s, originating in an Amish community in Medford, Wisconsin. It gained wider popularity in the 1980s after being shared with seed savers from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Fruit: Bright red, oxheart- or plum-shaped (sometimes blocky or slightly irregular), weighing 8–12 oz (up to larger in good conditions). Meaty flesh with few seeds, thick walls, and a coreless structure.
Flavor: Rich, sweet, full-bodied tomato taste with some acidity—often described as world-class and superior to many standard paste varieties. Juicier and sweeter than typical Romas.
Plant: Indeterminate (vines grow continually, needing staking or caging), vigorous but sometimes wispy-looking. Productive with heavy yields in optimal conditions.
Uses: Ideal for sauces, paste, canning, ketchup, and salsa due to meatiness and low water content when cooked down. Surprisingly good fresh—in salads, slicing, or sandwiches—unlike many paste tomatoes that can taste bland raw.
