Torkuviahe Bush Bean (Vigna unguiculata 'Torkuviahe') is a very rare and nearly extinct heirloom cowpea. We would love for you to help us keep this beautiful variety going. We only ask that if you are an experienced gardener who shares the same vision, please buy these and steward them responsibly.
It's traditionally grown by the Ewe people in West Africa, particularly around the Lake Volta region in Ghana, where only a handful of farmers are believed to still cultivate it.
Pods: Long, straight, pale-yellow.
Beans: Small, red (similar to some red cowpea types).
Growth habit: Cowpeas come in bush, semi-bush, or vining forms; sources describe this variety in contexts that suggest it's suitable as a bush or semi-bush type, though many cowpeas can sprawl if unsupported.
Uses: Dual-purpose — young tender pods can be eaten fresh like snap beans (string beans), while mature beans are dried and used in stews, with rice, or spicy sauces.
Rarity: Often marketed as "super rare" or "endangered," with seeds sold in very limited quantities (sometimes just 1 seed per packet) by specialty preservation sellers.
It's an annual plant that's easy to germinate and sown in spring, thriving in warm conditions like other cowpeas.
Planting Guide included. Ships in padded envelope.
