Pinkeye Purple Hull Cowpea - Heirloom 20 seeds

$3.48

Pinkeye Purple Hull (also called Pink Eye Purple Hull) is one of the most popular varieties of Southern peas (cowpeas, Vigna unguiculata), a heat-tolerant legume beloved in the American South for fresh shelling, canning, freezing, or drying.

Pods — Slender, purple (or purple-tinged) when mature, typically 6–8 inches long, often concentrated near the top or crown of the plant for easier picking.

Peas — Cream-colored with a distinctive pink or maroon "eye" (hilum); mild, nutty flavor, great fresh or cooked (often with ham hocks, greens, and cornbread).

Growth Habit — Primarily bush to semi-bush/semi-vining, reaching 18–30 inches tall. Most varieties are compact and self-supporting (no staking needed), though vigorous plants may show some vining if supported. Specific bush selections like "Coronet" or "Top Pick" stay very compact (~2 ft) and are ideal for small spaces or containers.

Advantages — Drought-tolerant, nitrogen-fixing (improves soil), high-yielding, and performs well in hot, humid conditions.

60–70 days to fresh shell stage; longer for dry peas.
