The Barese heirloom melon, also known as Carosello Barese, is a rare Italian landrace variety of melon (Cucumis melo) originating from the Apulia (Puglia) region, particularly around Bari (hence "Barese," meaning "from Bari"). It's part of the broader carosello group of melon-cucumbers popular in southern Italy.

Botanically a melon but harvested immature → it tastes and is used like a cucumber.
Fruits are typically oval or round, light green, with light ribbing and a fine, downy peach-like fuzz (no spines).
Flavor is crisp, refreshing, mild, sweet, and completely bitter-free (burpless and easy to digest).
When picked young (around 4-6 inches) → it's crunchy like a cucumber, ideal for fresh eating, salads, or sandwiches.
If left to mature longer → it develops a sweeter, melon-like fragrance and taste (skin may turn slightly yellow).
