The white tomesol is a striking appearance with its light-yellow skin and slightly flattened shape. This beefsteak has very tangy and sweet flesh. The plants are fairly easy to grow and gives a great harvest of tomatoes. An amazing white heirloom tomato!
White Tomesol' plants produce fruit that average eight to ten ounces each, but can reach up to one pound. They are oblate in shape, pale yellow in color and often display a delicate pink blush on the blossom end. The fruits that peek out from under their regular leaf foliage, and therefore receive more sunlight will darken in color. Their flavor is rich and sweet, yet mild, as hinted by its color. An excellent slicing tomato.
White Tomesol was originally introduced to gardeners by Dorothy Beiswenger of Crookston, Minnesota (MN BE D), her description announcing this variety was simply, "med. to large pure white fruit." That is it! Those words were enough to encourage folks to try it, for its reputation to spread, and for seed companies to start offering it to their customers. In regards to its name, we don't know who named it, but in Spanish, "tomé sol" means, "to take or drink sun;" perhaps in reference to the blush it can develop.
