Charleston Gray is a big, juicy, open-pollinated watermelon variety for your home garden! Oblong watermelons are 24" long x 10" wide and weigh about 30 pounds. The flesh is bright red, crisp, free of fiber, with a great classic watermelon flavor! The tough rind makes it a good shipper. Resistant to FW, AN1, and AN3.
Charles Frederic Andrus, a research scientist at the USDA laboratory in Charleston, developed this melon in the late 1940s to fulfill the need for a good shipping melon that could resist disease. His Charleston Grey watermelon was introduced in 1954 by the Southeastern Vegetable Breeding Laboratory. An immediate success, it was once the most popular commercially grown melon in the United States; though other varieties have now taken this position, Charleston Gray watermelons still make the state of South Carolina proud.
Grown in Tennessee.
